Programme Note

The work Symphony No. 4 “Arctica” for orchestra, choir, and piano by Lera Auerbach, which premiered in Washington on March 30, 2019, was performed under the patronage of the National Geographic Society in the North Pole countries USA, Russia, Norway, Finland, Sweden, Canada, Iceland and Denmark (Grönland).
The Russian-American composer, pianist, writer, and visual artist Lera Auerbach was inspired by the National Geographic Society, which she invited as a kind of cultural ambassador to visit the Arctic to experience the magical, majestic, and to experience the fragile beauty of this region.

Press Quotes

"Auerbach has likened the piano to an Inuit spirit guide, presiding over a vision that leads backwards from the arrival of Europeans in the Arctic to the beginning of time..."
