1950-53 - Piano studies in Leipzig; further composition studies at the Hochschule für Musik in Berlin with Ernst Pepping and organ studies with Joseph Ahrens

since 1950 - Various concert performances as organist and conductor
1953-62 - Lecturer at the Kirchenmusikschule Berlin
1960 - Lecturer at the Hochschule für Musik Berlin
1964 - Initiator of the series Musica nova sacra
1968-93 - Professorship in composition at the Hochschule der Künste Berlin
1970-85 - Co-director of the Berlin Bach Festival
since 1979 - Member of the Berlin Academy of Arts; director of the Academy's music department from 1986 to 2003
since 1981 - Member of the Bavarian Academy of Arts
1990 - Initiator of the Institut für Neue Musik at the Hochschule der Künste Berlin
2008 - Died in Berlin
