Al Largo was commissioned by the New York Philharmonic (Alan Gilbert, Music Director), London Philharmonic Orchestra and Casa da Musica, Porto. Magnus Lindberg, Composer-in-Residence of the New York Philharmonic, 2009-2012.

The work was composed in 2009-2010. It was first performed on June 23rd 2010 at Avery Fisher Hall, New York, the New York Philharmonic, conducted by Alan Gilbert.
